Hi,
Yes. An EGL-enabled 64-bit Linux test build is posted now as well.
To run this version of VMD you'll need a machine that either has
an EGL-capable OpenGL driver set or a bleeding edge version of Mesa.

To run VMD with EGL off-screen rendering enabled, you would launch it
like this:
  vmd -dispdev openglpbuffer

This is the same way that you would run the normal OpenGL builds of VMD
for off-screen rendering, except that the EGL build of VMD is able to run
even when there is no X-Windows server, whereas the normal OpenGL+GLX build
requires an X-Windows server. The EGL version is best suited for running
VMD on clouds, clusters, and supercomputers that have headless nodes with
no windowing system running.

I personally used NVIDIA driver version 358.16 for EGL development and testing.
Some subsequent NVIDIA driver versions had bugs for EGL, but I intend to
do more testing and provide a list of other driver versions that are known
to be usable after I and the user community do more testing. In particular
I will have to collect further information for getting EGL working on
software rasterizers such as Mesa and Intel OpenSWR, as these have very
recently added EGL support and I don't have specific version numbers in-hand
at this moment.

Cheers,
  John Stone
