  If the file is very large, this may be a file size related problem.
The new beta version of VMD 1.8.4 now has support for reading DCD files
larger than 2GB on Windows machines:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/alpha/

You'll want to give that a try if this is a big DCD file (>= 2GB).
The beta version also has much more descriptive debugging info when
errors occur while loading a DCD, so that may be useful as well.
