yes. you can do it even without any modification to VMD.
... at least with some platforms. check out http://zlibc.linux.lu/

just install it and do:

env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/uncompress.o vmd
i have been using it for _ages_ on linux machines.
it works very well and on top of that, read of large
ASCII files via NFS is significantly faster.
