Hi,
VMD hasn't been compiled for pure X11 on a MacOS X system for something
like 15 years, so I gaurantee that combination of #ifdefs and make flags
is no longer current or well tested in recent years. If you want to
compile for X11 there's going to be some work involved to resurrect the
required #ifdefs to make it biuld properly. In principle it should be
workable as long as you have all of the required header files etc.
If you skip compiling macosxvmdstart.c,
(just do "touch ../MACOSX/macosxvmdstart.o" and then run make again)
how far does the build get?

Best,
  John Stone
