Tobias,
  It would seem that the drivers for your card aren't properly active,
as you should not be seeing "Mesa GLX Indirect" as your OpenGL driver
if you have an ATI card. If your ATI drivers were working properly,
you should expect to see the card make/model explicitly stated in the
OpenGL renderer ID string that VMD prints on startup. The fact that
the OpenGL driver doesn't list 3-D texturing capability
is the reason why you weren't getting colors on your surfaces. You need
to fix the video driver and hopefully that will resolve the problem you
had with VMD.
