Hi,
  Did you ensure that the DISPLAY environment variable was set when
you ran VMD this way? On X11-based builds of VMD, if the
DISPLAY environment variable is unset, then VMD will not attempt
to open the graphical interfaces. If you want to do batch-mode VMD
rendering, you may want to try the latest test versions of VMD 1.9.2,
as they support OpenGL Pbuffer rendering even in batch mode runs with
no graphical interfaces displayed.
