Dmitry,
  From your description, it sounds like you don't have the NetPBM packages
installed on your Mac yet. These are required in order to use the vmdmovie
plugin at this time. There are instructions for installing NetPBM via the
"fink" package manager for MacOS X on the 'vmdmovie' documentation page here:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/plugins/vmdmovie/
