please see the corresponding documentation for details. quite a few
features are optional when compiling VMD.

outside of wanting to use a native python installation or doing
VMD development, there is no need to build VMD yourself.

the existing precompiled binaries should work just fine on both.
you many need to install a few compatibility packages.
