Christian,
  I assume you're using the 32-bit IRIX6 version of VMD yes?
If so, then the maximum size you will be able to specify is
probably something like 2048. Try that and let me know if
that cures your problem. In reality, you may only need 1024
or so, since the CAVE shared memory arena is only used to store
the 3-D geometry of the drawn objects, and not the entire trajectory
data, for example. I don't know what the maximum arena size that
CAVElib will provide is, I've never loaded anything bigger than 300,000
atoms in the CAVE because the tremendous rendering demands on such a
large structure bring the frame rate down too far, at least on
the (now very old) Onyx2 IR3 system we have running the CAVE here.
Try 2048 or 1024 megabytes for the CAVE shared memory arena size
and let me know if you still encounter any trouble.
