Hi,
  Without the DISPLAY environment variable set, graphical
X-windows applications like VMD can't communicate with the
windowing system. In the case of VMD, without that being
set, it runs in text mode automatically.

Try setting your DISPLAY environment variable to
  :0.0

e.g., for bash:
  export DISPLAY=:0.0
e.g., for tcsh:
  setenv DISPLAY :0.0
