Hi,
  Can you share the precise VMD error message you're seeing?
Without seeing the precise error message, along with the VMD text
messages that are printed when the program first starts up, it is
hard to diagnose what might be going wrong. If I were to guess,
I would say that it sounds like you might be running your GPU out
of memory if it is a large cube file.
