So, that is what I was seeing, the windows manager was stopping vmd
from making the display window larger than the available screen size.
So off to google ...

Discovered that can set the window size another way:

Top Bar of Window >- Right Mouse Click -> More Actions -> Special
Window Settings -> Size and Position -> Size - specify dimensions of
window and select apply now

To get the correct window size needed to add 8 to the x direction and
29 to the y. Most likely to do with the borders of the window.

So now I can get it to render at higher resolutions, above and beyond
the screen size. Problem solved.
