Norman,
  Yes, the mirror material property will only have an effect when the
scene is processed by ray tracing engines like Tachyon. At present, it
is only implemented for Tachyon and the GPU-accelerated TachyonL-OptiX
built-into VMD, but for the next release, I expect to have time to extend
the implementation to POV-Ray and several other renderers as well.
You may find it particularly interesting to display it interactively
using the built-in GPU Tachyon ray tracer. By viewing it interactively,
you can get the reflections and orientations just right.
