please read the compilation instructions carefully. please also search
the mailing list archives for previous discussions on how to compile
VMD from source. it is very likely that you will run into similar
problems than what has already been discussed before and this way you
can save some time by looking up the answers instead of having to wait
for somebody to explain it to you (again).

since you say you need python for analysis, i would recommend to try a
text mode version and thus save yourself a lot of trouble and effort
during compilation.
