"didn't work" is not very helpful.

you'd have to provide more details and references. question is:
do you mean "VMD doesn't work correctly" or simply
"i couldn't figure out how to do it".

you can write a custom file loading procedure
and then call it manually from the prompt. or
write a little Tk GUI. i should have a template
for the latter somewhere that can be added
to .vmdrc. from there on it is only a matter of
filling in the rest.
