Hi,
  Is it possible that your machine has a bad video driver?
Did your system get updated since you installed VMD?
These sorts of things often cause such problems.
What happens when you run this command?:
  glxinfo

Does VMD run if you run it in text mode, like this?:
  vmd -dispdev text
