Alex,
  When you tried using the binary distribution, what problem(s)
did you have? Did it fail to start, or did you not get as far as
running it? You should be able to run the VMD binary distributions
we provide so long as you ensure that you've got whatever
"legacy C/C++ compatability" packages for Ubuntu installed on your system.
