it can. i have it working on my desktop. you have given the NUMPY option
to configure, do you?

VMD 1.8.6 does not support Tcl/Tk 8.5. this is due to some optimizations
that bypass the official API. you need the latest VMD cvs sources for
Tcl/Tk 8.5 support. just this week we have been able to successfully
test the up-to-date VMD code on the freshly released fedora 11.

for the upcoming vmd-1.8.7 release, i plan to contribute "native" rpm
packages for several rpm based linux systems that i have access to.
