Sorry, I was actually running vmd1.8.2
I was actually aware of its presence in my /usr/local/bin/ directory so
I installed vmd187beta5 in another folder and I created a link called "vmd"

My mistake was to call "vmd" instead of "./vmd".

Anyway, the new installation was unsuccessful. I'll create another
thread for it.
