Hi,
  If the main menu doesn't appear, the most likely issue is that you
don't have a .vmdrc (or have an empty one). Try running the command:
  menu main on

If that doesn't work, then you may have neglected to build with the
option "FLTK" which is what enables the VMD GUIs.
