if you are building from sources (i assume you want to add some
features to VMD), then you should seriously consider building
from the current CVS. the 1.8.6 sources are quite outdated and

that usually means that you tried to customize vmd via a .vmdrc
file, but that does not contain "menu main on".

does the same happen with a precompiled executable?

if not, please follow the instructions on bug reports and
send us the messages printed at startup.
