Hi,
  This is an issue with SCIM, and is briefly described in the VMD
release notes for Linux. The upcoming builds of VMD 1.8.7 will be
using a newer version of Tcl/Tk and won't be subject to the SCIM
issues, but in the mean time, your best bet is to disable SCIM or
wait for the next round of test builds to be posted. If I'm successful
getting things done on time, it'll just be another week or so to wait...
