Peter,
  I'm not sure what would emit the error you're seeing, but I would
first check to see if you have a .cshrc file in your home directory.
If so, I would try renaming it to .cshrc.bak and then try starting
VMD. If you still get the error message, then I'd guess this is some
sort of issue with tcsh. One thing to try here would be to quickly
run tcsh interactively yourself, and see if you get any warnings etc.
