Tom,
  Yes, it's possible, but not using the "snapshot" renderer. You would
need to use one of the others such as Tachyon, POV-Ray, etc. I may one day
make the 'snapshot' renderer capable of drawing to off-screen display
buffers, but this is very system-specific and typically still requires a
connection to the windowing system, so rendering using one of the other
renderers may still be a better way to go.
