Hi Ioana,
  It sounds like you happen to have a PYTHONPATH that might
be clashing with VMD? Can you do a "printenv" from within
your VMD text console and email it to us at vmd_at_ks.uiuc.edu
(i.e. printenv > foo.txt, then mail us foo.txt...)
