John,
  I am trying to compile the plugins right now ... but somehow the 1.8.3 source distribution doesnt have any plugins directory ...As far as I understood from the documentation the plugins source files should be packaged together with the vmd distribution...
  I dowloaded the vmd 1.8.3 source from the web site. Is the directory with plugins source files missing or did I understant something wrong?
