Bob,
  A quick thing to try since you're using an ATI car is (csh shell):
setenv VMDSIMPLEGRAPHICS 1
vmd

If you're up and running after doing that, there are a couple of more
specific methods of getting around ATI driver bugs that are less
heavy-handed.
