Dear John,
Thanks for your kind reply. I have already solved the problem last night. It
was not caused by the video mode but the new version TK. I uninstalled the
new version TK and TCL, and then I reinstalled the VMD. Now it works fine. I
found some command like 'vmdtext' in the NAMD user manual which may be one
of the new version of VMD.

Hi,
  What video mode are you running in?
TkCon may not be getting a font or color that it wants from the X server,
and may be bailing out as a result. Do the other items from the VMD
extensions menu work ok? (i.e. sequence viewer, for example).
