I had seen the first web page (which I must admit I skim read) but not
the second. Now it all works perfectly.

Thank you. I'll submit the port to this mailing list first when I have
it ready, so that FreeBSD users on this list can check it out. (Also I
think that there will be a difference between FreeBSD 5.x and 4.x that I
will need to take into account somehow.)
