if you follow the VMD installation instructions correctly for a
system-wide installation, you will use su(do) only once and that will
still work for system-wide installation.
you used sudo 3 times and that contributed to the problems, as part of
those steps were incorrect.

also, unless you have a significant number of people running VMD on
your machine, the extra effort required to have each of them do their
own local VMD installation is a small price compared to the trouble
you can get into from incorrect use of super-user privilege.

..and even if you manage systems with a large number of users (like i
do), there is often no need to use superuser rights for installing
non-system software. on our shared machines, we create a user
"install" that owns shared software in a dedicated file system tree.
this way you su to the "install" user which doesn't have (or need) any
root privileges and cannot damage the system setup in any way.
