this is *exactly* the kind of *excessive* and *unnecessary* use of
sudo that i am criticizing. if you do this everywhere and as
frequently, it is no wonder your machine gets messed up. i am
convinced that you have similar issues elsewhere, e.g. with OpenGL
libraries, that contribute to your problems.

the correct procedure is listed in the installation instructions that
come with VMD.
