Hi,
  Aside from what Axel mentioned, I'm not sure what your usage of the TkPNG
is intended for, but I have recently added PNG support to developmental
versions of VMD 1.9.3 to allow the "Snapshot" and various internal
ray tracing engines to save images directly to PNG format.
If you need PNG capabilities specifically within Tk that's interesting
and something I want to know more about. I haven't looked at the TkPNG
package, but I would be concerned about whatever library dependencies it
might carry with it. If it is possible to build it and the rest of VMD
against the same PNG library, then this might be relatively straightforward.
