  Further info:
The "XOpenIM" error you're seeing is likely part of the Tcl/Tk or FLTK
startup, as VMD itself makes no calls to these routines. See this page:
  http://www.x.org/archive/X11R7.6/doc/man/man3/XOpenIM.3.xhtml

Do you have some internationalized input scheme setup on your system with
SCIM or something similar?
