Norman,
  Yes, the current beta versions don't implement volumetric texturing yet.
I was at a conference all last week, but I am hoping to spend a couple of days
implementing volumetric texturing and a couple of other small missing items
for the OptiX-based Tachyon implementation in VMD now that I'm back.
