there is no need to learn CVS. it simply gives you read-only access to
the development sources.
you can use whatever SCM system for your developments you prefer.
overall the internal APIs of VMD have been very stable over the last
years, so it is rarely an issue to be somewhat out of sync. all
contributions are reviewed by developers before being committed to the
CVS and development is centralized anyway, so there is currently
little pressure to change this. i personally don't use CVS for
anything anymore, but there is really not a problem with having VMD
under CVS in the current development process.
