i don't think that this is VMD specific but rather due to your X11
setup. check your font path setting and perhaps you many need to
*remove* some (unscaled) fonts. X11 will use the first matching font
and thus if an "ugly" font matches, you may need to remove it or
change the order in the fontpath.
the details of how this all works go (far) beyond the scope of this
