Hi,
  To draw spheres that visibly rotate around their center, you would
likely want to draw them yourself using a triangle mesh composed of
some kind of alternating color scheme that makes the orientation of
the spheres obvious and will make them easier to visually interpret.
I would suggest that you look at some of the recently discussed
scripts for rendering ellipsoids or other geometry as a starting point.
You can search the VMD-L archive to find these.
