Hi,
  Okay, I think I know what's going on now.
First: delete your existing VMD installation and tar files.
Then:
  - download the LINUXAMD64 version of VMD 1.9.1.
  - unpack the tar file
  - run ./configure and install it

If you need to edit the configure script, be careful not to introduce
errors. It seems that you do have Perl installed, but you may have broken
the configure script last time when you had edited it for yourself.
