This is not unusual at all. We use it as well and I think that it is
the default for the modern distributions.

Do you have any input methods set for non-ascii characters (f.e.
chinese) ? On a set of workstations with the exact same setup
(automatically installed and configured), if the input method is set
up by the user, VMD will crash and the setting of LANG to C fixes it;
if the input method is not set, then VMD will work with the default
LANG (en_US.UTF-8).
