check the message in the console at start-up.
I had seminar problem on at IBM-T43 w/ ATI graphics under Suse11.0

Turns out that some graphics libraries were not installed by default in
Suse11.0 for my particular hardware config.

forgot which lib it was... but the error message referenced
"render.c" and some line number.
