Hi,
  I would suspect the Intel i810 graphics driver as the source of trouble
in this case. What does the command 'glxinfo' report on your system?
You could try setting the environment variable VMDSIMPLEGRAPHICS to 1
prior to running VMD and see if it gets farther along.
