Hi Eric, VMD-L,
  VMD doesn't natively process xyz files, in order to read
them you need to have Babel installed on your computer. Your
SGI system must have had Babel already correctly installed.
If someone wants to write an XYZ plugin for VMD this would
take care of this once and for all :-) I'd be happy to help
someone do this if there's an interest.
