Hi Margaret,
  Can you do this on your Linux box, and email us the results
(adjust the path to the vmd_LINUX binary as necessary):
gdb /usr/local/lib/vmd/vmd_LINUX core

then at the gdb prompt:
  where

Send us that gdb output, that will help us figure out what happened.
