Brendan,
  Another possibility is that you have a version of VMD that didn't
have VRPN support compiled in, though that seems unlikely at first
blush. Can you tell us what platform and which version of VMD you're
using when you send us those config files? Paul suggested this as
another possilibility after he read your note, so I thought I'd ask
for this information as well.
