Computational Biology of the Cell - The Next Decade

Computational Biology of the Cell
The Next Decade

Clockwise: fullerene orbitals, satellite tobacco mosaic virus, photosynthetic chromatophore vesicle

Amidst the great turmoil in the world around us we witness as computational biologists once-in-a-life time opportunities:

  • Technologies in the form of petascale computers like Blue Waters, the Shaw computer, and graphics processing units, promise ms simulations soon.
  • Coarse-grained algorithms will permit explorations into entirely new scales of time and space.
  • Force fields accounting for atomic polarizabilities and linking to quantum chemistry on the fly make simulations more accurate than ever.
  • Hybrid computational - experimental (X-ray, EM) methods will reveal cellular machines from the ribosome to the flagellum.
  • Partnerships between computing and biotechnology / pharmacology are hugely promising.

We need to prepare ourselves for the challenges and opportunities of the next decade. This one-of-a-kind symposium "Computational Biology - The Next Decade" will give us the freedom to explore what's ahead. The best, most active, and most communicative scientists are invited to this event for an interesting and valuable experience.
