The Great Pumpkin Patch - 21 Oct 2007

In October 2007, the UIUC Horticulture Club organized a trip to the Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur, IL. The place is a tourist trap next to a huge pumpkin farm, where they grow 400(!) different varieties of pumpkin, squash, and gourd. Dad brought me along this year; and while I was a bit dubious at first, I have to admit that it was pretty spectacular.

Images
Preparing to Leave
We gathered near Dad's office, and had to wait for a few more people to show up before we could go.
Grandpa Bob
He's an Antique Person!
Directions and Donuts
Two ingredients in any trip.
Dad and Student
The lighting wasn't right, but oh well. It would have been nice if she'd had a name tag, too...
Wagons
Yes, there were quite a few wagons there, to carry along the gourds you eventually wanted.
"We Welcome You To Our Farm"
"Welcome to the Great Pumpkin Patch"
"We Ask That You:"
"Do Not Climb On Anything" is probably the most amusing.
Waiting To Enter
We're here, now when can we get in!
Pumpkin with Writing
Wow, how do they grow it like that?
Ugly Gourd
I had no idea what I was in for yet.
Entering the Farm
This was just the first area with squash for sale...
Finger Squash
I think it had a different name, but I didn't write it down.
African Warty
Yep, those are warts alright!
Yugoslavian Finger
Okay, maybe I *did* get the name. Good!
Orange-and-Black
Not quite Illini.
Orage-and-Black, II
It was a pretty one, at least.
Just Pumpkins
That's a lot of pumpkins.
Pumpkins
The field of orange was actually pretty neat.
Baking Squash Area
Grandpa didn't really know what to think about it all.
Stacked Pumpkins
They seemed to stay up pretty well, given it was a windy day...
Tree Pumpkins
Some pumpkins grow in trees. Apparently.
Display Pumpkins
Those that had taken the flower arrangement classes were the most impressed with these.
Coloured Gourds
Red, Orange, and Yellow...
Coloured Gourds, II
...Green and Blue...
Coloured Gourds, III
...Violet, Tan, and White. Whee, rainbow.
Red Warty Thing
"It's red and warty... go figure." Thank you for the caption!
Wall of Pumpkins
They spread it out this year, apparently, so they could all be seen. I've got more pictures of it later.
Labelled Gourds
I'm sure there was a theme to this, but I don't know what it was.
Alpaca
The random animals they had at the farm were quite amusing to me.
Pigs
I guess the pigs weren't as exciting...
Three Little Pigs
...but they did have a Big Bad Wolf watching over them, which was amusing.
Hay Monsters
Hubcap eyes can make the most innocuous of bales of hay vicious-looking.
Galeux d'Eysines
"As ugly as it is not good looking". Again, amusing to my dad and I.
Pumpkin Tree
This was our meeting spot.
Dad and Hay Bale Monster
Don't eat him, please!
Goat
There were a bunch of goats, but, well, they're not really that exciting to take pictures of.
Hay Maze
It was hard to avoid just climbing out the top.
Nate in the Maze
I could at least get pictures from above...
Spider Bale
He's coming to get us...
Bunny
...must not think of effective ways to cook it with pumpkin...
Mount Laganarta
Now this was an interesting attraction.
Mount Laganarta, II
Stacks and stacks of Laganarta gourds...
Mount Laganarta, III
It photographed well, too.
Hay Buffalo
You are what you eat.
Kiddie Area
I'm not sure this was strictly necessary, since there was plenty of other stuff to do, but hey, who am I to argue?
Big Pumpkins
These were the hundreds of pounders. Not that I got to try to lift them. Hmmph.
Noah's Ark
The cutest attraction was also the most religious.
Noah's Ark, II
The gourds marched in two by two! (And I like the snakes.)
Australian Butter
Apparently the best pumpkin on the farm. We probably should have tried one.
Mack
This guy is the geneticist that works for the farm, and really gets/takes care of the huge variety of gourds. He was an interesting person to listen to.
Fluffy Chickens
I'm not a huge chicken fan, but these guys were pretty neat.
Pretty Chickens
These guys were even neater.
Chicken Taunting
Come, try the tasty child!
Hay Tower
I don't know what the guy was doing on top.
Mountain of Gourds
This was the best way of seeing just how many different varieties there were on the farm.
Mountain of Gourds, II
I think the pictures do a pretty good job of showing the number of varieties, too.
Mountain of Gourds, III
Let's just ignore the central hay tower, shall we?
Mountain of Gourds, IV
I hope that my Dad can find something useful from these to use in his class.
Mountain of Gourds, V
I'm betting that it won't be that hard...
Wall of Gourds
In this case, the Cucurbita section.
Wall of Gourds, II
That's a nice display.
Mums
The other purpose of the farm is to sell a few flowers. But that's not as fun to take pictures of, at least not for me...
Llama
Many that have journeyed with me on my photo safaris in the past have noticed my fascination with animals.
Llama, II
Well, the llama is no exception to this rule!
Llama, III
I'm a llama, you're a llaama!
Alpaca
Not a llama!
Llama, IV
Llama llama duck!
Llama, V
Okay, I'll stop singing now that I've already gotten the song back in your head.
Llama, VI
More sensible people would have stopped taking pictures of the llama by now.
Llama, VII
But not me!
