LEGO Death Star II - 25-26 Aug 2005

After my previous experiences with the LEGO Star Destroyer, my hopes were high for this new set. The LEGO Death Star II was 3,449 pieces, and the idea looked impressive. So I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed that this product only took me 13 hours to assemble, compared to the 20.5 of the Star Destroyer...

Still, it's an impressive set. I was especially fond of the ship steering wheels wheels being used as spokes. And the added skill level of trying to play while my two cats were climbing all around me was fun.

Box
This box arrived for me in the mail while I was at work that Thursday.
Box, Closeup
Not too shabby for $10 shipping.
Box with Cat
This probably offers some idea of the scale of the box.
Open Box
Inside were four boxes full of legos, a manual, and a divider.
Piles of Pieces
Our coffee table just barely fit all of the pieces. (And not without damage)
The Base (1:45 into the building)
The first step of the building process: build the base to assemble the rest of the LEGOs onto. This took me nearly two hours.
Superstructure (3:00)
By three hours in, I had a the internal superstructure finished. Jesse was sitting behind my head most of this time, annoyed that I was ignoring him.
Bottom Rear Half Done (5:30)
The curved pieces were fairly consistent across the whole design, but I still mostly followed the instructions. Beth had come home by this point, to find me still working...
Interlude: Tim and Cats
I was having a great time. The cats were happy to have someone to hang around with.
Bottom Rear Nearly Complete (6:00)
Before I went to sleep, I wanted to at least finish off this side of things.
Unfinished Side Partially Done (7:00)
Of course, I forced myself to get a little bit more done, this time part of the "incomplete" side of the moon.
Bottom Right Complete (7:00)
But the time had come to get some sleep.
Bottom Right Complete, II (7:00)
And so I went to bed, content with my work for the day, at about 1am.
Unfinished Side Nearly Done (Day 2, 9:30)
The next morning, I got up and started work again at 8am.
Unfinished Side Attached (Day 2, 9:45)
The unfinished side was more work than the rest of the set, and more tedious; but it does look kinda neat.
Bottom Complete (Day 2, 10:30)
I finished off the bottom of the Death Star by 11:30am, when I went off to grab some quick lunch.
Continuing to Build (Day 2, 11:15)
Around here was when Beth got annoyed at me for not getting enough pictures.
Continuing to Build (Day 2, 11:15)
This somewhat corresponded to when she got up.
Laser Installed (Day 2, 12:15)
The laser design was definitely the coolest part of the set.
Post-Laser Building (Day 2, 12:15)
Even after the laser was finished, there was still work to do...
The Last Few Pieces (Day 2, 12:45)
...but by 2pm, I was just finishing them up.
Filling in the Gaps (Day 2, 12:45)
The last few pieces went onto the Death Star at about 2:15pm.
Finished Product (Day 2, 13:00)
And here's the finished Death Star!
Finished Product, II (Day 2, 13:00)
I think everybody's favorite part is the firing beam.
Finished Product, Back (Day 2, 13:00)
I wish they hadn't covered the steering wheels, myself.
Death Star and Cat
The cats haven't done too much damage to the toy yet...
Darth Jesse
But you never know when those guys are going to turn evil, do you?
