The Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group (www.ks.uiuc.edu) at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology seeks to fill a vacancy for a full-time Computer Systems Engineer. The purpose of this position is to manage the group’s computational environment, including system administration duties. Position open immediately. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Administer and maintain a network of 50 desktop workstations running Red Hat Linux, 20 file and application servers running Solaris, and 100 TB of data storage
  • Lead a team of graduate and undergraduate assistants to handle troubleshooting and basic user support for technically skilled scientific users
  • Other duties as assigned (duties may expand over time)

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical or scientific field. Experience with UNIX systems administration using Red Hat and Solaris. Ability to maintain and write basic software tools using scripting languages such as Perl or Bash. The candidate must be capable of working productively with an existing team of software developers, and forming effective working relationships with other campus technical and administrative units. Strong written and verbal skills, and an ability to perform duties using independent judgment and decision-making without extensive direction/supervision.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the University of Illinois system, or other higher education experience. Background in budgeting and purchasing for system and network upgrades, writing grant proposals, and a general familiarity with grant-driven/funded groups.

The Computer Systems Engineer position is a 100% full-time, benefits-eligible Academic Professional position.
