sorry, but my crystal ball doesn't work anymore
and i don't have the second sight to see what
exactly you have done or not or done wrongly.

if you do things correctly, it will work.

the installation guide explains that VMD
installs in two locations (wrapper script
and library) and - of course - you need
to remove both and you need to make
sure that there is nothing else colliding
with the installation and no errors/warnings.
