Hi Alan,
  Not "rewritten" as such, but we have added basic Python support within VMD
some time ago, and have been gradually adding functionality little by
litting bringing the Python interfaces in VMD in sync with the
existing Tcl interfaces. Check out the VMD User's Guide for more info.
